A Single Girl Shopping List For When You Don't Care If You Have It By Christmas
Another super fun thing about being single: it actually doesn’t matter when gifts for yourself show up. We self-gift all year, thank you! In general though, since publishing the Single Girl’s Gift Guide for 2020, I’ve found a lot of other cool shit, and I’m not about to wait a whole year to tell you. Are you kidding? This is 2020 we don’t plan for the future, what’s wrong with you?! So below, a list of very cool things I’ve found lately that reminded me of us. Definitely not guaranteed to arrive by any time in particular, but absolutely delightful whenever they show up.
Box ONE Board Game designed for ONE PERSON. Y’all, has a game for one person been invented since SOLITAIRE?? I got so excited when I found this, not because it’s particularly cool (it is, but anyway), but because it meant that someone saw us and spent literally years developing a game for us. Bonus points for the fact that the person who did that is Neil Patrick Harris. I’M NOT KIDDING. If you love codes, puzzles, and escape room type stuff, this is your game!
A Single Dessert Plate: I like plates you can just buy one of. I love that for us. These plates are Clare V for Anthropologie and come in four styles shown above. I like the one with little blue and red dots because it reminds me of French brasseries oh god remember when we could GO DO THINGS??
Buy via Anthropologie
A “Going Out” Mask: All of my masks have now been washed 100 times and fall squarely in the “casual daytime” category. But what about going out, once the vaccine starts to disperse and we’re allowed out again but still want to be respectful and cautious? I’m sorry but my faded cotton polka dots are really going to throw a wrench in my ensemble, thank you.
Supersoft Half Zip Top: There’s a little girl in the 90s who’s super stoked about half-zips returning to power. In general, Lou & Grey from Loft makes some of the softest fabrics imaginable, and while fingers crossed for putting an end to this pandemic shit in 2021, it’s not like we’re gonna stop wearing comfy clothes, ya know? I will keep buying “house attire” for the rest of my life and no one can stop me.
Plant Mom Mug: Last time, I linked to some super cute and personalizable pet mugs that you guys LOVED, but I realized I left out the plant moms! (And dads!) (Also if you want to use a non-binary title here are some options!) I don’t know about you but a cute mug has brightened many a socially distant morning for me this year. Okay but also the What The Fucculent mug cracked me RIGHT UP.
Super Scrunchie: It’s a giant scrunchie. It’s $12. It comes in more colors than I want to count right now. I also like the idea of buying two of these things and pretending that any shirt you own has very fancy cuffs.
Mod Sisal Coasters: We are not basic, table-ruining newbs, let us decorate our homes accordingly. Save the surface of your table and also get compliments any time someone comes over who doesn’t think coasters are a cool kid purchase. These come from a business that’s local to me in Brooklyn, and they have LOTS of stunning decor items to explore.
Old Navy Henley: I now own this in three colors. I cannot stop. It is just the perfect henley, I don’t know what else to say. I have really been into waffle knits this year, something about them being…oh I don’t know THE COMFIEST IN THE WORLD? This really affordable top comes in several colors and I actually buy a variety of sizes too, depending on how I want to wear it.
VHS Tape Puzzle: Look closely at the titles on the tapes, this puzzle speaks to us. I also love puzzles as thoughtful, touchless gifts you can send to people you love who are riding out the pandemic alone. Puzzles are an easy solo activity (if you don’t count the cat), and you can just cover them with a towel or mat when you need your surface back.
Cozy Pajamas: I don’t think I’m actually allowed to write these lists anymore without including affordable pajamas. These are from Target, and I love them because they’re appropriate for the Christmas season, but they’re not so themed that you wouldn’t want to wear them all winter, too.
Faux Fur Throw Blanket: I want to live atop a pile of these, thank you. Faux fur as a texture adds instantaneous cozy to a couch arm, a reading chair, the foot of your bed, anywhere really. As I write this, there’s a snow storm blowing into New York, and I thoroughly regret not grabbing one of these beauties sooner.
Hair Bandie: Look, if Oprah loves it, I love it. This stretch wrap was included in Oprah’s Favorite Things for 2020, and it’s designed for beginners and hair wrap enthusiasts alike. This is more of a band style as opposed to a scarf style that can cover the whole head. It comes in SO many colors, some vibrant, some designed to complement a variety of skin tones. This one in “cider” though, is absolutely my favorite.
Affordable Bath Luxury: If you’re not a dedicated Dr. Teal’s fan, join this party. I love Dr. Teal’s body washes because if I’m honest, I hate scrubbing the entire shower down every single time I want to take a bath, but if you a) have a bathtub that’s separate from your shower and are thus living a LIFE, or b) you just really take a lot of baths, try one of Dr. Teal’s products for a genuinely relaxing product that’s incredibly affordable.
Vintage Inspired Food Ornaments: They’re not going to make it on the tree this year, but how HAPPY will you be to find them in your decor collection for next year?? I’m big fan of the dill pickle ornament because in my head I’m picturing a tree that’s decorated with ONLY dill pickles and it’s making me laugh. Also this toilet paper ornament is quite hilarious and I assume will continue to be, year after year.
A Special Apron: Hello, my name is Shani, and I am tired of getting flour all over my pajamas. MAYBE IT’S TIME FOR AN APRON, I DUNNO? If aprons remind you of a tattered and stained item your grandma used to wear, level up your kitchen style, yes that’s a thing, with one of these beauties. (This Etsy shop has super cute pot holders, too!)
Name Earrings: You know I love personalized stuff for us, and it is really hard to look at these delicate little earrings and not add to cart. They’re on sale right now (under $20!) and they ship for free!
Pet Hat: Y’all, it’s a pet hat. I have very little else to say.
